Whether you’re stopping by for an expertly crafted margarita at the bar, a family-style feast, or a celebratory gathering, Chela delivers an experience that’s authentically rich and delightfully memorable.
The menu at Chela is a treasure trove for lovers of bold, soulful Mexican cuisine. Highlights like the Table Side Guacamole and homemade Churros showcase the kitchen’s commitment to freshness and tradition, while inventive dishes such as Enchiladas Mole Poblano and Tacos de Cochinita evoke deep, complex flavors that make each bite unforgettable. The California-style burritos are a standout – packed with succulent shrimp marinated in guajillo, tender chipotle maple caramelized pork, or zesty Mexican jerk chicken, all paired with crispy fries and chipotle aioli for a perfect harmony of textures and tastes. For heartier appetites, the Chicken In Mole Rojo — rich, smoky, and served family-style with rice, beans, and fresh tortillas — feels like a loving embrace on a plate.
What truly elevates Chela is its dynamic cocktail program. Signature drinks like the Jalapeño Hibiscus Margarita and Chela’s Mexican Mule offer a playful yet sophisticated balance of heat, sweetness, and citrus, enticing your palate with each sip. Bartenders Carlos and Esteban are often praised for their attentiveness and flair behind the bar, making the happy hour experience one that locals eagerly anticipate. The vibrant Grapefruit Margaritas and unique Smoked Pineapple Tamarind cocktails are impossible to resist, perfectly matching the boldness of the cuisine.
The ambiance at Chela pulses with character — the open kitchen buzzes with energy, allowing diners to witness the culinary craft up close, while the warm, festive decor (which even goes all out for occasions like Christmas) creates an inviting and memorable backdrop. Whether you’re enjoying a cozy brunch at the bar or gathering for a lively dinner with friends, the staff’s attentiveness makes every visit feel personalized. One guest recounts an especially remarkable experience where the team accommodated a late-arriving friend with grace and warmth, underscoring Chela’s genuine hospitality.
Chela has rightfully earned a reputation as a “hidden gem” in the neighborhood, blending authentic Mexican flavors with a California-inspired edge and an upbeat, friendly vibe. Patrons consistently applaud the quality of the food, the speed and attentiveness of the service, and the exceptional cocktails, making it a must-visit for anyone craving a true taste of Mexico with a Brooklyn flair. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, a visit to Chela promises a rich, flavorful journey brimming with warmth and zest.
Overall one of my favorite Mexican spots in the area. Great drinks and the food hits the spot. The service is incredibly fast so I definitely recommend spacing out your order to enjoy your time there.
I came here for a quick bite and was hesitant since it’s tough to find good Mexican food in NYC. Chela is pretty good! Great service, great decor (they went all out for Christmas lol), and overall decent prices as well. I definitely recommend them.
Had an amazing meal, very reasonable cost during happy hour and a fantastic margarita! Staff were exceptionally warm and attentive!
This review is about a month delayed, but I had brunch here at the bar with a couple of girlfriends and was truly blown away by the attentiveness of the staff. The third member of our party arrived much later — after my friend and I had already begun eating our meals (possibly even after we’d already finished, or were near finished…) We ordered for her at the same time we ordered our food, though, and without even having to ask or say anything, the staff carefully waited and watched for her to arrive so that they could promptly serve her her meal once she was seated. They had clearly been keeping it warm for her in the kitchen. I ordered the vegan version of their Gorditas De Hongos, which was phenomenal. (FYI this is only an appetizer; Chela does currently offer one vegan brunch entree option, though: the Vegetarian Enchiladas, sans dairy.) My non-vegan friends, both of whom are Mexican, loved their dishes as well. We stayed for a couple of drinks after our meal, so ended up being there for a good while — at least a couple of hours. Every single one of the bartenders and waitstaff who served us and who we otherwise interacted with were abundantly kind/warm, friendly, and professional. I’d been here just once before this, earlier this year, that time just for drinks, but had a great experience then, too. The margaritas are super tasty, and there’s lots of flavors to choose from. 10/10 recommend Chela for any occasion and any time of day! Can just about guarantee you will be well taken care of and have a great time. Salud :)
Hidden gem of Park Slope for authentic Mexican cuisine, not to mention the best margaritas in the neighborhood. Carlos / Esteban are awesome bartenders. Love the open kitchen; these chefs know what they are doing. The vibe is great whether you are with a group for dinner, or at the bar for happy hour. Definitely check this place out if you haven’t been!
Such a great meal. The staff were wonderful. Brett, the manager went above and beyond to help us make sure we ordered all the right things. I will definitely be coming back to dine here, the next time I’m in Lancaster.
Carnitas are a must on Sunday, amazing food every-time. I lost count how many times we’ve been to Chela, always superb service. It’s a gem, the flavors are thoughtfully crafted.
Amazing food and amazing people and service. The tortilla chicken soup was my favorite. The drinks were fresh and flavorful.
